The tapering/barreling of shaft was a common practice on the antique arrows, especially the wood arrows.
 
By making the head and tail section of the shaft thinner, while keeping the mid section thicker, the arrow would fly with reduced oscillation. In practice, you may find your barreled arrows corrects to a straight flight more quickly, if you do not already have the technique to achieve it on any kind of arrows.

The barreled shape can also reduce the air friction, making the arrow preserving more speed before landing at the target.
